Today (24 April) is the birthday of Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American engineer who has made much contribution to the use of zippers. Google made a big big zipper on the search page, if you pull down the zipper, you’ll find search results related to Gideon Sundback.
Gideon Sundback is actually not the first one who came up with the idea of using interlocking teeth to fasten fabrics. Before Gideon Sundback, no one had ever made any success in creating truly usable zippers. Gideon overcame the problem by putting a dimple on the underside of each tooth and a nib on the top.
Gideon was born in 1880 in Sweden, he later moved to Germany and then the United States. He died in 1954.
