Top 10 Posts of Cloud High Club in 2011

2011 was a terrific year.  I started this blog in March and wrote 368 posts, that is more than 1 post a day.  I just did a little data mining to find out the most popular blogposts in the last year.

Below are the top 10 blog posts in 2011:

  1. How to integrate Google Plus with Facebook and Twitter
  2. Start G+: Sync your posts in Google Plus, Facebook and Twitter, show FB and Twitter streams in Google+
  3. 10 popular Japanese anime Chrome themes, Metal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Bleach, One Piece…
  4. How to search Google Plus posts and profiles: a missing feature
  5. 15 essential Chrome add-ons for Google Plus beginners
  6. Who to follow on Google Plus? Expand your circles by adding recommended users!
  7. Complete guide to migration from Facebook to Google+, transfer your contacts, photos and videos
  8. 10 Awesome Game Themes for Chrome, Super Mario Bros, Angry Birds, Mega Man and more
  9. Chromebook vs Android Tablet: Does Touch UI Matter?
  10. Top 10 Google Chrome movie themes, Harry Potter, Transformer, Kung Fu Panda and more

I definitely think that 2011 was the “year of social network”.

2011: The Year of Social Network

Google Plus

6 out of the top 10 posts are related to social networks.  And the majority of them talks about Google Plus tips and tools.  This is certainly not an objective truth about the social network market shares, but more due to my personal preference of writing about Google’s services and products (Google+, Chromebook, Chrome).

2011 was not the first year when social networks are invented.  It is however the year when a major market player, Google+, was released and when different social networks received major changes to the user interface and features (e.g. Facebook and Twitter).  We internet users are so eager to share, making social sites the hottest market in the IT field.

The popularity of social sharing will definitely continue to grow in 2012.  If you count the time you spend on the internet, you would find that at least half (or mroe) of the time is spent on social sites.

You Like Chrome Themes?  I Give You More.

Megan Fox Google Chrome Theme

A little surprise is that 3 Chrome theme review posts got into the top 10.  I started introducing and reviewing Chrome themes to build a regular column on Sunday.  It turned out that people like giving their Chrome browser a new look once in a while.  An even greater surprise is that Japanese anime themes occupied position #3 on the top 10 list.  I was not aware of the fact that there are so many Japanese anime fans in the English world.

Chrome themes would definitely be a major topic that I’ll write more in 2012.  (BTW, the above is my favorite Chrome theme in 2011)

Mobile Internet Devices

Chrome OS Tablet Conceptual Design

#9 goes to Chromebook vs Android Tablet: Does Touch UI Matter?, a blog post that I compared my Chromebook and my 7″ tablet.  I am not sure how you people categorize these two kinds of machines, but I’ll take them as “mobile internet devices” (what an old school term by the way).  I said “internet” instead of “computer” because I believe most tablet uses surf the web and use apps to connect to the internet (Facebook, YouTube, emailing…).  Chromebook is certainly even more web-centric.

To me, the reason I use Chromebook and tablet is they are fast and direct routes to the internet.  Besides, they are lightweight and not power-demanding.  Unlike my Macbook that I have to charge the battery everyday, my Chromebook could last for a week given approximately the same usage.

Obviously all IT giants know about this, so Apple has already released iPad and produced the smallest Macbook Air (only 11″).  Google is said to have their own branded android tablet this year.  Amazon also has Kindle Fire that rocked the market.

This is a wrap up of what my readers liked the most in 2011.  I will be writing more about these topics in Cloud High Club.  Are you one of the “social-network-Chrome-theme-mobile-internet-device”-holic?

Turn Facebook Album Photos Into Photo Collage, Carousel…

Do yo have a lot of photos in Facebook?  Apart from the traditional tiled view, do you want to present your photos in more interesting ways?  Try the Facebook apps I introduce today.

Facebook Photo Apps: Photo Collage, Carousel and More

TopicShow.com is a web app that helps users to turn photos into web pages using templates.  This feature itself is great but today I want to introduce the Facebook app launched by them.  TopicShow developed a series of Facebook photo Apps that let users to present their photos as photo collage, carousel, story book, etc.

Don’t let your photos gather digital dust!  Create some awesome photo albums and share with friends!

5 Recommended Reddit Chrome Extensions

Are you a redditor?  I am.  It’s great to see the web sites recommended by other internet users, and it’s great to share what I found too.  But not every web site has a Reddit button.  In this article I’ll introduce some Chrome extensions that brings Reddit features to web sites no matter they have the submission button or not.  Besides, I also introduce two extensions that enhances the function of Reddit.

Reddit Companion

This is an official product by reddit.com.  It adds a submission bar in your Chrome browser so that you can share any web site you found.  You can also upvote and downvote a web site.  New messages are shown in this notification bar when they appear.

VHX.tv – Online Video Sharing and Discovery

Today’s featured social web app is VHX, a place where you can discover and share video online.  This web app features an easy-to-use interface that makes watching and sharing video on popular social sites and media sites extremely easy.

Online Video Sharing and Discovery Made Easy

So what is this VHX all about?  First of all, it is a video watching portal.  The web app brings you the popular video clips being shared by people on the internet.  You can quite some channels such as movie trailers, BuzzFeed and Staff Picks chosen by VHX staff and watch instantly in the browser window.

VHX - Online Video Sharing and Discovery

But there is more about this web app.  By linking your accounts on social platforms to VHX, i.e. Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, you can enjoy the video shared by your friends.  So you don’t have to go here and there, just one web app to enjoy video on all platforms.  It also has a Reddit channel that does not require your Reddit credentials.

VHX - Online Video Sharing and Discovery - Reddit channel

A third source of finding video on VHX is by sharing.  Users can add a bookmarklet in their browser to share any video found on a web site to VHX.

VHX - Online Video Sharing and Discovery - Post to Social Sites

This web app is not only designed for instant watching.  You can put video in your queue for watching later.  And if you discovered any great stuff, simply click share to post it to Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr to invite your friends to view it.

Summary

I like the idea of VHX because it does not simply scrape popular video on the internet, just like the TwitTV I introduced before.  The core idea of VHX is crowdsourcing and sharing.  The web app itself does not need to monitor the video sharing trend on popular sites, it simply rely on its users and their friends.  I particularly like the simple user interface of it.  Tablet users should find it easy to navigate around.

How To Update Multiple Popular Social Networking Sites By Automation

It’s Social Wednesday!  Every Wednesday I write about web apps and browser add-ons or observations related to social networks.  SUBSCRIBE RSS feed or email updates to follow these stories!

Many of us being social animals have accounts on almost all popular social networking sites.  Yes, almost all (don’t tell me you only have one account… I won’t believe you).  As your online appearance grows, you become more busy with updating all your status on and uploading photos to these networks.  For example, you had an awesome dinner in a restaurant, you want to share photos of the food to your friends.  How many times do you need to upload the photos and your comments?  Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Jaiku…  And you may even have blogs to update as well.  The more accounts you have, the less enjoyable sharing your life online becomes.

I like talking about automation.  After my ifttt and Yahoo! Pipes posts, let me write another post about automating social network updates.  In this post I’ll introduce some tools you can use to make one update and spread to the whole internet instantly.

Hellotxt – Publish to Popular Social Networking Sites On The Go

To use Hellotxt, you need to create accounts on the social sites by yourself and enter the login details into the system one by one.  This is a painful process but once you get through it you would find Hellotxt very helpful.

Hellotxt - Organize your social networking site updates

The killer feature of Hellotxt is portability.  It has iPhone and Android apps that allow you to make updates wherever you are.  And it’s free.  It connects to a wide variety of networks but unfortunately Google+ is not supported at the time of writing this post.

Ping.fm – Update Social Sites at Once Easily

Basically Ping.fm works in a similar way as Hellotxt.  The major difference is the former has a less fancy user interface and no smartphone app.

Ping.fm - Social Networking Sites Updater

Ping.fm supports the following networks.  Again, Google+ is not included.

Pingfm - Supported Social Networks

OnlyWire – Access to All Popular Social Networking Sites

This is how OnlyWire works.  You enter your login credentials, you write new status update in OnlyWire, it sends the update to all the sites.  You can update social networking sites such as Google+, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.  You can also make new social bookmarks to Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc. and blogs such as Tumblr and Posterous.

OnlyWire - updates popular social networking sites

You enter your updates via a web interface.  Then the information is sent to the submitter which is installed in your computer.  The submitter will approach al social networking and bookmarking sites.  You can see what works and what doesn’t, with an option to re-submit.

OnlyWire - Posts to popular social networks

OnlyWire has a free option but with submission limit.  To use the advanced features you need to pay a fee as low as $10 per month.  I think OnlyWire is most suitable for companies and organizations that regularly publish news because of the price, web interface and the requirement of installing a submitter, although individual users would also find it useful if they mostly update their statuses via desktop computer (e.g. in the office).

Official Site: http://onlywire.com

PixelPipe – Content Syndication Across Social Sites

Pixelpipe - Upload media to popular social networking sites

Compared with the above sites, Pixelpipe is more media content oriented.  You can see from the list below that it’s main function is to upload multimedia content such as music, video and photos.  If you like sharing photos, this is a handy tool you should try.  It even supports Dropbox and Box.net so that you can backup the things you posted.  There is also an option to email the content to a specific recipient.  This provides great flexibility to content distribution.

Summary

There web apps should have covered almost all popular social networking sites.  In most cases you don’t really need to use them all.  Just use the one that supports the greatest number of social sites you have.  I usually use Hellotxt only, because the more of these apps you use the more tedious account log-in input you have to do!

Linkein Labs – Get the most out of the professional network

It’s Social Wednesday!  Every Wednesday I write about web apps and browser add-ons or observations related to social networks.  SUBSCRIBE RSS feed or email updates to follow these stories!

Do you use Linkedin?  I do.  It is a rapidly growing social network for professionals, e.g. engineers, lawyers and accountants.  To many Linkedin is a simple web service without many special features.  Actually, some Linkedin employees, just like Google employees who built Google Labs products, created some experimental features for Linkedin.  In this article I’ll introduce a few good pieces of work in Linkedin that could help you explore Linkedin.

Linkedin Labs Selection – ChromeIn

ChromeIn is a Chrome extension that displays latest updates in your Linkedin.  What you usually found in the All Updates column are shown when you click the Chromein extension icon.  Besides, you may also share your ideas or updates and submit to Linkedin.

Linkedin Labs - ChromeIn

Resume Builder

This thing came out as it should be the built-in function of Linkedin.  It helps users to easily create a resume by pulling their personal data from Linkedin.  In Resume Builder you can choose from over 10 different templates.  These templates have different looking and item orders.

Linkein Labs - Resume Builder

Connection Timeline

This is an interesting product.  It shows your education and career life as a timeline.  Besides, in each stage it shows the connections you made.  Everything is presented graphically and dynamically.  You see the photos of ex-colleagues coming out as you joined a company and fly away, then other colleagues appear as the timeline runs.  While this may not have much practical use, it is quite nice to review the growth of your social life in this way.

Linkein Labs - Connection Timeline

Instant Search

This one looks like a mimic of the instant search of Google.  Basically what it does is to find out friends in your network and people your friends know.  What makes it different from the built-in search function is that results are generated as you type.

Linkein Labs - Instant
