Netflix Plug-in Appears in Samsung Chromebook’s Chrome OS Dev Channel

A month after Google promised to deliver Netflix to Chromebooks, we finally found this missing plug-in in Chrome OS dev channel.

Netflix Plug-in for Chromebook

A Samsung Chromebook user discovered that a Netflix plug-in appeared in the dev channel of the Chrome OS on Samsung Chromebooks.  He posted his findings in Chromebook Central (official forum of Chromebook owners).  Currently we could only see the plug-in but it does not work.

This plug-in could be very useful for Chrome OS users.  For example, Chromebox, a (to be released) mini desktop computer by Samsung running Chrome OS, would become a TV box thanks to this plug-in (potential threat to Google TV?).  And Chromebook users could output the video to their TVs via VGA or HDMI port, making the Chromebook a perfect device for the living room.

Unfortunately this plug-in is not available in Cr-48 Chromebook dev channel.  Does it mean that Cr-48′s hardware is not capable to handle video rendering for Netflix?

  • I’m not a user of an actual Chromebook, i run Gentoo Linux and installed the latest dev build of Chrome OS and I didn’t get the .so plugin file either. So im wondering if there is anyway someone can help point to the sources to obtain the actual plugin for manually installing it yourself. This will be nice when i can actually run chromeOS as a VM to stream netflix on linux. Won’t be much more overhead than running a native instance of chromium.. Will be very nice to get rid of the MS Windows virtual machine off my hard drive.. Would just like for someone to provide more information or a download to that .so file! :)
