Weeks ago I introduced xPud, a web-centric OS with a kiosk-type UI based on Linux.  One of the developers behind xPud, penk (a Taiwanese), has been developing a tablet UI with Chrome browser, xPad.  Currently it could only work in VirtualBox.

While Google had said that Chrome OS won’t be developed for tablet device, it’s interesting to see non-Google people working on touch UI for Chrome.  Does it mean that the market demand is high?  Should Google re-think the whole strategy?

BrowserLinux: A simple web-centric OS

We have seen cloud-based operation systems like Chrome OS and Joli OS which are feature-rich.  Today we are going to look at a stripped down operation system, BrowserLinux.  If you want a really fast OS that serves only one function, web surfing, BrowserLinux worths a try.

Cloud OS: xPud – Shortest Path to the Cloud

xPud is a tiny operating system for daily casual use.  It is a Linux distribution with many features taken away.  The only functions left are a web browser, a media player and a file manager.

What bother to build such a stripped-down system?  In the words of the project owners:

We’re trying to achieve the following goals in this project:

  • lightweight and fast booting
  • applications for daily use
  • easy-to-use user interface

We shall see if xPud meets these goals.
